How Often Should I Clean Aircon Filter?

How Often Should I Clean Aircon Filter? It’s essential to clean your air conditioner‘s filter regularly. A dirty filter can cause your AC unit to work harder, leading to higher energy bills and premature wear and tear on the unit. How often you need to have a clean aircon filter will depend on several factors, such as the type of filter you have, the size of your team, and how often it’s used.

However, most filters should be cleaned at least once every three months. Here is a guide to help you determine how often you should clean your aircon filter. Read on – How Often Should I Clean Aircon Filter?

1. Manual Filter

A manual filter – the type you flip over to clean or remove and wash – should be cleaned at least every two to three months. If you don’t follow this schedule, the dirt in the filter can make it difficult for your AC unit to operate efficiently, which can cause it to break down faster.

2. Electronic Filter

Your electronic air conditioner filter is also known as a dust filter and is usually located outside your air conditioning equipment, close to where the air enters. You’ll know it’s time for cleaning when you see a buildup of dust on the front of your unit.

3. HEPA Filter

The HEPA filter is the most crucial element of your air conditioner as it helps remove allergens particles in the air, keeping you healthy. A dirty HEPA filter can be a common cause of allergies and asthma. To keep your air conditioner running efficiently, you should clean your HEPA filter at least once a month.

4. Demand Filter

A demand (or economizer) filter controls how much hot or cold air enters your central unit and outdoor unit(s). Because it’s located on the indoor unit (and has no moving parts), it’s the most likely to need cleaning. This can be done by pulling on the grill, but it will also be visible through a small screw-in opening on your AC unit.

5. Electrically Driven Air Conditioner

The air conditioning system in your home is connected to electricity through a power cord, so you’ll need to clean this part of your unit at least once a year. You can check and clean your power cord by using a small screwdriver or utility knife to pry off the cover over the plug.

6. Portable Air Conditioner

If your air conditioner is portable, such as a window unit or a mini-split system, the filter is usually located outside the team near where the air enters. You should clean this filter at least once every six months or whenever the AC unit isn’t used for an extended period.

7. Ductless Mini-Split System Air Conditioning System

A mini-split system is either a central air unit with an indoor fan assembly or an air conditioning unit itself, connected directly to some fans attached to walls or ceilings of rooms in your home. You’ll also need to clean these filters at least once a year.

8. Window Air Conditioning Unit

To ensure it stays appropriately functioning and protected from dirt, you need to clean your window air conditioner filter at least once a year. You can clean this part of your unit by removing the grille and washing the dust off with a washcloth or towel. Cleaning the grill means you’ll have more profound openings for airflow, which will provide better cooling.

9. Air Purifier

An air purifier filters out pollen, dust mites, bacteria, and other particles that cause allergies or respiratory problems. It is essential to clean the filter periodically to keep it running correctly. After you’ve cleaned it, reassemble your air purifier and test to see that it is working as it should be before use again in your home.

10. Refrigerator Air Filter

Because refrigerator filters aren’t located as often as other filters, they may go longer without being cleaned. You should clean this filter at least every two months or more frequently if you live in an area with a lot of dust or other contaminants in the air.

11. Thermostat

It would help if you also cleaned your thermostat once a month to keep it running smoothly. Open up the thermostat’s cover and use a vacuum cleaner brush and a damp cloth to wipe off any dust that may have collected on it or the inner parts of your air conditioner.

You should also lubricate the screws that hold the cover together to keep them from rusting as you clean them each month. If you live in an area with hard water, you may need to change this part of your air conditioner more often than once every four months.

12. Air Conditioner

If you have central air, it’s essential to clean this filter at least once per year. You can do this by opening up the unit and removing the grille covering the air filter, then using a vacuum cleaner brush and a soft cloth to wipe off any dust collected on its inner parts.

Do not clean this part of your air conditioner more often than once every four months, however, or you may risk having it short-circuit while it is operating.

13. Small AC Unit

If your air conditioner is small enough to fit in a closet, you can clean it without ever unplugging it. Open up the unit and remove the filter, then use a soft brush or vacuum cleaner to clear off any dust collected on its inner components.

How Often Should I Clean Aircon Filter? – Conclusion

As you can see, there are many places air conditioning equipment in your home can get dirty and clogged up with dust and other items. If you want to keep your equipment running efficiently, it’s essential to clean all of these parts periodically. Although it may be a good idea to have someone with experience in this area clean your air conditioner if it’s filthy, you should be able to do the rest of these projects yourself with minimal cleaning supplies and time.
